Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto (aka VHILS) has developed a unique visual language based on aesthetics of vandalism derived from his background in illegal graffiti. Destroying to create, he works to remove the surface layers of walls and other media with unconventional tools in a groundbreaking bas-relief carving technique, inspiring reflection on the impact of urbanity, development and global homogenization on landscapes and people’s identities. VHILS has worked in a variety of media — everything from stencil painting and metal etching to video, sculptural installations and pyrotechnic explosions.
