Robert Selvaggio

Born in Florida in the early 1970s, Robert Selvaggio has spent his entire life fascinated by music, art, and science. His mother had earned a degree in commercial art from Florida State University and consistently worked as a freelance artist as Selvaggio was growing up; as a result, he always found himself drawing, tracing, and coloring as a child. The influence of music came from his uncle who worked as a musician. Selvaggio was able to borrow his uncle’s guitar and for a seventh grade project he even built a guitar of his own.

While he continued to create art over the years, for a long time, Selvaggio’s focused on creating music. In high school he joined a band, wrote a great deal of music, and played countless gigs. After graduating high school he played as a solo artist in local restaurants and bars and played in a few bands before he found himself working as a radio DJ. Selvaggio remained in the radio business for five years while working on his own music at the same time. After saving up his money, he bought a four-track cassette recorder and began recording his songs. Selvaggio was soon being asked to produce and record the music of other bands and before long he was recording full time. A number of the artists with whom he worked went on to sign major label deals and in 2000 he moved to Los Angeles to continue working with big stars. Since then, he has worked with high-profile artists like Eagle Eye Cherry, Jewel, socialburn, and Puddle of Mudd.

With Selvaggio’s success came the opportunity to take a break from working for other people. In 2006 he decided to begin producing his own record; he has also taken advantage of this time to return to one of his original passions – painting. Since 2006, he has been actively exhibiting his work in galleries and art shops in the Southern California area. His artwork has been described as primitive, haunting, and vibrant, in part because his method can differ each time he creates a piece of art. Sometimes he completes the painting in his mind before even laying a brush to the canvas, sometimes he explores numerous ideas in sketches, and sometimes he simply approaches the canvas with no pre-decided intentions, just “letting it happen.” These different methods all have things in common, though: they are almost always inspired by Selvaggio’s passion for music and science and they all carry the passion and power of a multi-talented artistic mind.

Selvaggio continues to produce music and create art all the time, which keeps him incredibly busy. In recent years he has been asked whether he would choose between art and music. His response was simple: “There’s no way; from now on I’m doing both.” It is this unparalleled devotion to both fields of artistry that makes Robert Selvaggio’s creations so unique and powerful.
