Patrick Roy

Born in Sainte-Foy, Quebec in Canada in 1965, Patrick Roy is known for his stellar career as an ice hockey goaltender. Nicknamed “St. Patrick,” Roy wanted to be a goalie since the age of seven and in 1984 he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens. He played with the team until 1996, when he joined the Colorado Avalanche. In 1998, he was also Team Canada’s starting goalie at the Winter Olympics.

Over the course of his career, Roy has earned countless awards, honors, and accolades including four Stanley Cups (two with each team), three Conn Smythe trophies, five William M. Jennings trophies, and three Vezina trophies, to name just a few. He also is tied with Martin Brodeur for most NHL playoff shutouts (twenty three). Just after retiring in 2003, Roy was named the greatest goaltender in NHL history by a panel of 41 writers and by a simultaneous fan poll in 2004. Two years later, in 2006, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Roy is currently the co-owner, general manager, and head coach of the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
