Ian Johnstone

Edinburgh-born artist Ian Johnstone (1957-2009) began exhibiting his works with his father after receiving his Bachelor of Arts in painting from the Edinburgh College of Art and his Masters in Politics from the University of Edinburgh. Johnstone’s father, J.H.B. Johnstone, was a member of the Corstorphine Art Group, and the father-son team exhibited together with the art group in galleries such as The Edinburgh Bookshop, The Hanover Gallery, and the Pitlochry Festival Theatre. Johnstone’s work is now highly sought after, and is featured in many private collections throughout Britain and abroad.

Johnstone’s favorite subject to paint was the Scottish landscape in all of its variations; indeed, Johnstone praised the country for having “such a variety of landscape in such a small country.” For Johnstone, painting was an important as breathing, and that he painted “because I love it, and it’s not a job – it’s a passion. It’s an obsession…it’s an urge…and all-consuming interest. It’s not something you can switch on and off, it’s something I’ve got to do.”
