Caroline Shotton

As young girl, Caroline Shotton was an only child living on the outskirts of London, which meant that she had plenty of freedom to explore her artistic interests and could conveniently visit art galleries in London and the open countryside to find inspiration for her paintings. In her school years, Shotton was fascinated by the work of the old masters and the incredible realism they used in their paintings, but when she began studying at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, she became interested in surrealism and impressionism. These three movements are all a part of her work today and she uses them to create a unique and personal style.

While Shotton has the luxury of painting for pleasure now, she spent many years as a freelance artist and still takes many commissions. She appreciates this, she explains, be “every project is different and I am often asked to produce styles and subject matter I would never have dreamt of, had I been alone in my studio.… This has pushed me to unforeseen artistic tangents and given me an invaluable catalyst for the future.” For her own paintings, Shotton finds inspiration everywhere, from watching the light fall on her son’s hair to photographs she takes to cows in the field to images and stories she finds in newspapers and magazines. With these varied reference materials and her own expressive artistic style, she creates beautiful and appealing paintings in her home studio. Powerful, vibrant, and unique, it is no surprise Shotton’s paintings and limited edition fine art prints are collected around the world.
