Kathy Mitcham

Kathy Mitcham creates precious, on point works of art on a smaller scale. Her paintings depict garden scenes, potted plants, and landscapes which are more concerned with mood than with literal details. She is also known for a series depicting traditional doorways of Canada and Europe. Mitcham is a member of the Northwest Watercolor Society. She has works in many local and national collections including Prudential Insurance, Nordstrom, Daniel Smith, Inc. and Amoco Oil. In 1994 Kathy created the cover image for Daniel Smith's annual catalog of artist's materials.

Mitcham majored in textile design at UC-Davis, then went on to work as a textile designer in Hawaii for several years. Her designs, mostly floral, were printed on fabrics to be made into clothing. After she married she moved to Seattle, and found very few opportunities for textile work, so she explored other art fields, including graphic design and interior design. Eventually she became a full-time artist creating etchings that were distributed across the country. She eventually returned to one of her favorite mediums: watercolor.

She employs densely saturated colors and intense details in her paintings so that even the smallest details look as though they were photographed images, however he does create paintings in a looser style as well, which she refers to as "scribble paintings."
