Anita Lewis

Born in 1957 in Santa Monica, California, Anita Lewis has risen to great esteem in the art world over the last twenty years. Raised in Los Angeles, where she earned her degree in art and design, and in Europe, where she often finds her inspiration, Lewis has indulged her artistic talents since she was a child. She began painting with oil at the age of twelve and by the time she was fourteen, she was already creating commissioned work.

Lewis moved to Southern Germany in 1979 to continue exploring her artistic interests and has lived there ever since. During this time, her style has developed to include the training she had in European Modernism and her interest in the classical master of European art and architecture. She also applies Realism, Abstract, and the idea of less being more in her art. She often uses realism and impressionism to "ground" and center herself after long periods of abstract painting. In re-finding the form and shape of things in realism, she says it charges up the "creativity and freedom of the abstract once again."

Lewis’s style has often been described as understated, but with careful attention to detail. "‘Subtlety’ and ‘understated’ are quiet languages," she explains. "They speak volumes without [an] overflow of words, yet shout an uncompromised strength." In the "chaotic jungle" that is our world, Lewis uses her simplistic modernism to contrast with the madness. The clean lines, persistence of style, and simple beauty of her work is often inspired by her previous career as a designer of interior architecture and many of her paintings were created with the her hope that "her art will grace modern architecture and that modern architecture will grace her art in return."
