Aldo Mondino

Ironic, eclectic, curious are adjectives that describe Aldo Mondino’s work and figure. Mondino is not new to the art scene (he was born in 1939) and has been for many years on the international scene with exhibitions in Europe and the rest of the world. He still goes on looking new techniques and avenues to express himself. Mondino frequently works with traditional oil paints on canvas or linoleum and very much so incorperates works made with coffee beans or chocolates to arouse interests. One of his exhibitions was entitled “Dalla A alla Z: da acrilico a zucchero” (From A to Z: from acrylic to sugar- the Italian word for “sugar” begins actually with “z”). In the beginning he was inspired by surrealism, particularly by Duchamp’s work but later he begun to be attracted by cubists followed by the historic avant-garde. This constant research drove him to live abroad for extended periods of time, but he has always been deeply tied to Monferrato, where he still lives. Thanks to his journeys, especially to the East, his interest in other cultures has blossomed, and his pottery in Middle-Eastern style shows is a prime example of this growth.
