Tazouz
Tazouz began exhibiting her artistic talent when she was only three years old, by sketching just about anyone who came to her home. An ever-deepening interest in art inspired Tazouz to hit the road while still a teenager. She set out to travel and explore the world in search of her own inner truth and found the beginnings of what she calls her true education - the realization of her profound fascination and respect for all the people of the world, and the many different cultures and societies she encounters throughout her journeys.
Early on, Tazouz landed in the desert of southern Arizona, where she lived with the indigenous people of the Tohono O’odham Nation for almost a decade. Honing her skills as a portraitist, Tazouz says, "Seeing within and beyond became even more important to me during the eight years I lived among the Desert People, and it was there that I learned the true meaning of silence."
Seeking a change of scenery and a break from the desert heat, Tazouz then spent two years in Alaska, studying and painting the Inuit people. Out of her time in Alaska, came a series titled ‘People of the North’. This series gained the attention of a Japanese writer, who invited Tazouz to travel to Japan to meet the Ainu people, natives of Hokkaido, North Japan. Her travels have also included trips to Bali, Mexico and Rajasthan, India, and encounters with Nomads, Gypsies, Sadhus and Holy Masters. Some of her current works also include the portrayals of colorful dancers, musicians, mystical village scenes, and the cremation ceremonies of various cultures. Her paintings and drawings depict the indigenous peoples of the world and are a celebration of the human spirit.
Tazouz in her own words... “My professional career began in the mid sixties and those years have been both challenging and joyful. I have seen the strengths and weaknesses of human kind. My ability to show the inner worth of all people is a gift from the universe and a celebration of the human spirit...I love being an artist. In life as in art I am responsive to feelings, they take me beyond, to the very essence of the people I paint.”
