Born in 1964 in Tehran, Iran, Roya Azim and her family moved to the United States for her father’s work in 1979. Here Azim was exposed to a broad liberal arts education and in college she studied art history and literature, complementing this artist study with business administration. Azim was discouraged from a life of art by her family and friends, but art became a central focus in her life as she studied under the renowned Persian artist Emanuel. Much of her own work uses the sport of golf as an inspiration and often as a subject. Through this medium, she explores much of a pervasive and antiquated American culture, examining masculinity, wealth, nature, recreation, and competition. The precision and attention to form that is necessary in golf can be found in Azim’s work ethic and in her art. Azim’s artwork can be found in private and public collection all around the United States.
