Don Shula

Born in 1930 in Ohio, DON SHULA is known both as a professional football player and as a coach. After playing collegiate football at John Carroll University, Shula was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1951. He also played for the Baltimore Colts and the Washington Redskins, although he quit playing in 1957. It wasn’t long before Shula returned to the game, first as a defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions (1960-1962) and later as a head coach for the Baltimore Colts (1963-1969) and the Miami Dolphins (1970-1995). During his remarkable lengthy career, Shula earned a number of titles and awards. He holds the record for most games coached and for the most number of consecutive seasons as coach. Shula is known as “The Winningest Coach,” as he is the all-time leader in victories (347). He also coached the NFL’s first and only perfect season, in which the Miami Dolphins won every single game and the Super Bowl.
