Diana Martin
Diana Martin is a well known painter and illustrator from Guadalajara. She has illustrated articles for newspapers and magazines including La Jornada, which is a leading newspaper in her home state Jalisco, Mexico. Diana received her art degree from Casa Cultural Colomos and she also studies Japanese calligraphy with Fumiko Ogura at the University of Foreign Studies.
Martin has participated in over 20 group showings in her home country of Mexico and other countries including Cuba, Germany, and Malaysia. She has also had 26 solo exhibitions in Mexico and one in Los Angeles, California.
Diana Martin's style is an intriguing blend of the surreal, the grotesque and the beautiful. She blends a dark sense of humor with fantastical musings and each of her creations tell a dreamy, sometimes nightmarish story that intrigue and compel the viewer to look closer. She works in a variety of mediums, and many of her intricate drawings are in graphite shaded with thousands of thousands of razor-thin lines that result in images that are not just black and white, but all the shades and shadows of the grey areas in-between. Two of her more well-know series are "Strange Acquaintances" - works depicting wild-looking creatures in incongruous settings - and "Gourmet Portraits" - which explore the sometimes disturbing lengths people go to looking for a truly unforgettable meal.
In 2012, Martin co-wrote and illustrated a book with author Rafael Villegas titled "Juan Peregrino no salva al mundo", ("John Pilgrim Doesn't Save the World"). The work was presented at the prestigious Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, and it has been well received as a thought provoking "children's" book, (complete with fairy-tale like stories and lots of illustrations), that isn't really meant for kids at all.
With a recent brief residency in Los Angeles under her belt, Diana Martin has returned to Mexico, where she is currently working on another series of artworks.
