Dean Kendrick

Artist Dean Kendrick was born in Birmingham in 1970 and studied at Bourneville College of Art, where he was exposed to portraiture, landscape gardening, graphic design, and illustration. Afterward, he relocated to Stratford-upon-Avon to work as a designer for a large giftware company while continuing to paint and sell his work to individual buyers and small art galleries.

After experimenting with many styles, Kendrick has settled into a rather minimalist mode, desiring to leave something to the viewer’s imagination and thereby drawing him or her in to the work. An interest in movement and light are prevalent in his work and he primarily takes his inspiration from the world around him, beginning with a sketch to capture the elements of form that strike him on paper. He draws backwards, beginning with light rather than shadow, using dark paper and capturing the highlights of movement and form before he moves on to painting his subject. The final work is often realized in a combination of acrylic and oil paints, although Kendrick often experiments with other mediums. The resulting romantic and atmospheric artworks speak for themselves.
