Born in Gorkij, Russia in 1963, Sasha Bassari graduated from the School of Art in his native city before going on to the Art College, named after world famous sculptor, V.I. Mukhina in St. Petersburg, where he graduated in 1991. Bassari continues to live in the historical center of St. Petersburg in a tiny, one-bedroom at the top floor or an old building. He says he lives humbly as it gives him inspiration to stay pure — like the children in his paintings. The figures in his paintings are divine souls, innocent and pure. These figures are the essence of Bassari’s world that he and the art critics have come to call, Gentle Surrealism. Though Bassari's material is reminiscent of works of the famous Russian artist Sergie Smirnov, Bassari's work has its roots in the material of two great Italians: Botticelli and Modigliani. Bassari’s most recent collection of paintings was displayed at an exhibition in The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.
