Universal Studios

Universal Studios was founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, making it one of the oldest studios that still continuously produces movies. The studio’s first major successes were with the films The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) and The Phantom of the Opera (1925). The company stayed in the Laemmle family until 1936 with the release of the musical Show Boat, which, though successful, caused strain in the relationship with the Laemmles and stockholders. The change in regime was advantageous, since the company continued to make and produce successful films like Hamlet (1948) and Jaws (1975). Universal Studios is currently a subsidiary of NBC Universal, and it is one of the six major American film studios. Though there have been many incarnations, Universal Studios is still recognized by its famous logo: an Earth with a ring around it.
