Zinovy Shersher
“I want people to hear the music in my paintings," –Shersher
Zinovy Shersher was born in the former Soviet Union; he began his artistic endeavors in his early youth, already attending music school, he began his study of art at the age of 9. After high school, Shersher attended the University of Fine arts in Kursk, where he was eventually awarded a Masters of Arts degree in 1970. He went on to graduate from the College of Music in 1976.
In 1972 when Shersher moved to Moscow he “unofficially” began his art career. While under the political prowess of the Soviet Union he refused to paint politically related images, such as portraits of political figures, and in return the Soviet government banned his work from being exhibited in mainstream art exhibitions. However, this minor setback did not hinder him for long. With the help of his friends, he was able to exhibit his art in many underground art exhibits. Shersher made his way to the United States and began his new art career in New York, shortly after enrolling in the New York School of Visual Arts. His body of work won critical acclaim in one person and group exhibits.
Today, his work is featured in significant collections throughout the United States and Europe. One of Shersher's most important works has drawn considerable attention in Los Angeles (where he currently resides), particularly in the Aliso-Pico area where he installed a 2,000 square foot mural entitled "We have a future." This Project earned him numerous awards, the Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Los Angeles as well as the appreciation of the community.
