Pedro Vizcaino
Born in Havana, Cuba in 1966, Pedro Vizcaino is known for his remarkable drawings and sketches. Vizcaino studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes (School of Fine Arts), San Alejandro in Havana from 1977 to 1981 before continuing his studies at the Enrique José Varona Instituto Superior Pedagogico (Institute of Higher Learning). He moved to Miami, Florida in 1993 to pursue a career in the visual arts.
Vizcaino chose to express himself primarily through drawings because, as he says, “it’s the most basic form of human expression.” He generally creates pieces using colored pencils and ink on paper, making use of the negative space (blank areas) as well as the positive space (the areas he draws). Another aspect of his work that is a result of using pencils and ink is the spontaneous nature it seems to exude. This is exacerbated by the way his drawings are often of anthropomorphized every-day objects like airplanes, cars, shoes, and handguns. The unique and vibrant drawings seem to create a bridge between figurative and abstract art that appeals to both the seasoned art enthusiast and the novice.
Vizcaino’s artwork can be found in the Galeria Nina Menocal in Mexico City, Mexico, as well as in the permanent exhibitions of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba. He has also displayed art at the MOCA and MOLAA in California and at the LOWE Art Museum in Miami. He continues to create and exhibit his art and earn numerous awards for his creations.
